How to Teach a Child to Ride a Bike, Then a Unicycle
Wear helmet. For the unicycle, add wrist, knee, elbow, most importantly shin guards.
How to teach a child to ride a bike?
Buy a balance bike, which is a bike without pedals. Let the child practice until mastery. For example, they can push both feet backwards and then lift both feet, cruising the balance bike on momentum alone.
Then let the child practice on a tricycle, to get the hang of the pedals.
Finally, switch to a normal bike without balance wheels — the mini wheels sticking out that destroy the child’s balance. All they need is a big open area, like an empty parking lot. An adult can help them get on and get off at the beginning.
How to teach a child to ride a unicycle?
First, practice climbing onto the unicycle in a garage with cars on both sides, so they can grab or lean on them as needed.
Then try to ride a car’s length. After about 10 hours of practice, they can ride a car’s length without touching either car.
Then find a flat open place and let them ride — half a step, 1 step, then 2 steps, and so on.
